Customize Your Mac’s Icons

Customize Your Mac’s Icons:

“Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Using custom icons has always been an easy way to spice up your Mac — even prior to Mac OS X! In our opinion, Mac OS X finally made icons beautiful. It’s so easy change your icons that we’re always surprised when fellow Mac users marvel at our icons.

Here’s what our user folder looks like:

Note the folder for our blog is a big truck — something Ted Stevens assured the nation that the Internet is not.

Kinda snazzy, right?

The first step to custom icons is to download some. I usually get mine for free at InterFace.com, but a quick web search will turn up many sites offering free icons. (The IconFactory makes some pretty hot icons!)

Icon sets are usually offered as very small archives (a fancy word for a compressed file). Open up the archive and you’ll get an ordinary folder full of icons.

Tiger Folders by Orhan Okay.

Clicking on these icons usually doesn’t do much. They’re either empty folders, or they’re .ico files. To actually use one, select it with a single click, and then select Get Info from the File menu (or ctrl click, or CMD-I). The Get Info command gives you more information than you would ever want to know about your icon file — it looks something like this:

Click the icon in the upper left-hand corner to select it and make it glow with faint blue happiness.

Now that it is selected, use select Copy from the Edit menu to copy it to the clipboard (or press the command and C keys).

Next, navigate to the file or folder you want to customize, click its icon, and select Get Info from the File menu. Select the icon in the upper left-hand corner, and then select Paste from the Edit menu to paste your fancy new icon over the factory model. Voíla. The process doesn’t delete the default icon — it just hides it. If you want to go back to classic Aqua, select Cut from the Edit menu, and then watch the custom icon disappear.

But what about those fancy Trash icons in the set you downloaded? That’s a more complicated hack — one that can be safely accomplished with the purchase of CandyBar. But using CandyBar is another tutorial!

Bookshelf Doors Make for Easy Secret Passages

Bookshelf Doors Make for Easy Secret Passages:

woodfold-bookcase-doors.jpgThe life of a gadget journalist involves storing away dozens of cardboard boxes filled with gizmos, away from civilian eyes. Hopefully in a secret gadget lair sealed off by these bookshelf-slash-doors. The doors can support loads of up to 500 pounds, come with oak, cherry and mapple veneers, and open and close via a steel hinge that swings out the center. Combine this with a electric opener triggered by a hidden button, add a booby trap, and you’re talking about the Gizmodo Secret Lair I always dreamed of.

I guess those shelves can hold gadgets, too.

Need to save or write down the Windows Vista product key on your current PC? A beta version 2.0 of the previously-mentioned Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder app has been released, which reveals the product keys for Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007, other Windows apps and even dead Windows installations.

When you run the Key Finder, it will automatically display the keys for common apps, as pictured. To check a dead Windows install, from the menu choose ‘Load Hive’ and point it at the Windows installation directory. This one’s a must-have for those of you who, ahem, lost your original install disks.

See where a TinyURL is pointing with Tin Foil Hat:

tin-foil-hat.png

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Tin Foil Hat Greasemonkey script adds a tooltip to linked TinyURLs that displays the source URL linked to with the TinyURL.

We’ve discussed TinyURL etiquette in the past, and the main no-no was sending a TinyURL without any context for the actual link (and even if the original link was posted nearby, you still can’t verify that it’s accurate). This simple Greasemonkey script takes care of all of the TinyURL confusion, offering a shortened URL while displaying the source at the same time. Handy!

USC SCA To Offer Machinima Class

USC SCA To Offer Machinima Class:

t100-machinima.jpg

Continuing video games‘ slow takeover of the world, the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts is going to be offering a seminar on machinima. The class is being created in an effort to bring film and game students together to work on a common project.

CTIN 464, Game Studies Seminar. In this 2 unit class we will develop machinima. This is a perfect cross-division class for film and game students to work together. We will play games, watch films, and discuss the possibilities of machinima as an art form. Documentary machinima will be encouraged, and all topics are fair game, including projects about games. The history of machinima is short, and its full potential is yet to be realized- by aspiring media students.

Machinima being studied and created in a college setting… I never thought I’d see the day. At this rate it shouldn’t be too long before we see Harvard offering classes likeHow To Quickly Level Up Your Warcraft Character and Goldfarming 101.

[Thanks, Sean]

Software to detect fake photos

Filed under: Interesting — mist. @ 6:41 pm

Software to detect fake photos:

David Pescovitz:
When the Associated Press thinks that a photo may have been manipulated, they sometimes call Hany Farid, a Dartmouth College computer scientist. As previously reported on BB, Farid has spent several years developing a suite of software that helps automate the detection of manipulation in digital photos. For example, it looks for pixel repetitions, analyzes shadows, and examines the pupils of people in photos to determine if they were composited into the image. From Science News:

 Articles 20070324 F8259 2942
‘The eyes are a partial mirror into the world in which you’re photographed,’ Farid says. If there are two white dots in each eye, there had to have been two separate light sources. So, if a photo shows two dots in one person’s eyes and only one dot in another person’s eyes, it must have been spliced together from two different originals.

Also, the color of the light determines the dots’ precise shade of white. A composite image from different photographs may have shades that vary from person to person…

‘This is an arms race,’ Farid says. ‘I can already tell you how it’s going to end: We’re going to lose…’

Fashion Update W/ Stereolabrat

Fashion Update W/ Stereolabrat:

“1.LEGGINGS ARE NOT REPLACEMENTS FOR PANTS.

If you wish to wear leggings, they must be under a skirt or a dress. You can only substitute leggings for pants if there is a big hole cut out of it so your junk can stick out. So ask yourself: is there a hole for my junk? No? Ok then. I guess I’m wearing something on top of my leggings, i.e. CLOTHES.

2. UGGS: WHY ARE YOU STILL WEARING THEM?

Uggs make your legs look like pigs in a blanket. Especially when you wear them with a skirt. I especially like the purple Uggs. Someone asked, How can we make this even better? And purple was the answer. Thanks for that. I have another answer for you: THE FINGER.

3. WHITE SHOES ON MEN THAT ARE NOT SNEAKERS

Just stop it. Just fucking stop it. Enough. There is a point when irony crosses over to truly bad taste. You know who wore white shoes? Hitler. He was like ‘My goodness! Where are my white shoes? Also, kill more Jews.’

4. BATHING APE

Your sweatshirt is loud. Your sneakers are pink and orange and apparently only 200 people in the world have them and they all live in Japan. Good for you. Here’s a cookie. Enjoy it. What kind is it? It’s oatmeal raisin go fuck yourself. Bathing Ape is currently on the list of things that are dead to me. Other things that are dead to me: Arcade Fire, letters from children about how their dad is in Iraq. And also, still Madonna. Which brings me to my next point.

5. MADONNA

Madonna does not shop at H&M. She does not want to be your friend on MySpace. She’s a snaggletooth opportunistic talentless hackjob who does not reacharound when the moment is ‘getting special.’

6. THE GAP: BOYFRIEND TROUSERS

Good boyfriends don’t wear trousers. They wear pants. In England pants are another name for underpands. That’s fine. Good boyfriends don’t wear those either. My problem here are the models. Why does the Asian model look so X-TREME Asian? It’s as if she’s actually pulling her eyes to the side. What the fuck? In Asia, the models look like white people. In Ameirca, the models look more Asian than Asians. The whole thing is confusing. Current mood: Confused.”
