One-Time Use Electric Rubber Ducky

One-Time Use Electric Rubber Ducky:

0bathewdaio.jpgUnlike the rubber ducky mentioned earlier, this one provides a little less pleasure and a lot more pain. This electric ducky, meant for one-time use suicides, isn’t an actual product—it is another twisted art project by emo artist, Nicolas Gaudron.

The Most Useful Pen Ever

The Most Useful Pen Ever:

superpen.jpgThe only time we use a pen nowadays is to write checks every month for our outlandishly overpriced apartment, but this five-function pen could be just the thing we need. The pen comes painted with a metric/imperial ruler on the side—great for when you want to measure your junk.

Not only that, the four switchable tips are a pencil, a ball-point pen, a highlighter, and a stylus. We had one of these switchy-pens when we were kids, but none with a stylus and none with a ruler painted on the side of it. This is nerd heaven.

Pink. Rubber. Duck. Vibrator.

Pink. Rubber. Duck. Vibrator.:

duckie.jpgNot only is this rubber duck pink—or ‘Paris’, as they call it—it runs on only two AA batteries. You activate the duck by pressing his torso, which makes him bzzzz bzzzz bzzzz you into tranquility. If you happen to share a bathroom with roommates, or god forbid your parents, this is a good way to disguise your playtime toy.

As an added bonus, there’s a travel version that’s half the normal size and runs on one AAA battery. Although not quite small enough to go properly spelunking, it still provided us could provide you with hours of enjoyment in your hotel room at CES.

Talk the Talk: Slang of 65 American subcultures

Filed under: Interesting — mist. @ 9:13 am

Talk the Talk: Slang of 65 American subcultures:

Cory Doctorow:
Talk the Talk is a thoroughly enjoyable toilet-tank-top reference book, the kind of quirky thing that is endlessly fascinating and full of odd insights into worlds you never suspected existed. It’s a collection of glossaries of the slang of 65 American subcultures, from skinheads to hookers, puppeteers to ren faire habituees, con artists to Antarctic researchers, truckers to prisoners. Every page contains a surprise.

OIL: Synthol, a banned substance some bodybuilders inject to increase apparent muscle-size.

INSTAGOTH: A person who suddenly begins to dress goth and call him- or herself a goth. Not a compliment.

MUNCHKIN: A player who insists on having an unreasonably powerful character, or who builds a character that is a very robust in some respects and very weak in others. The practice is frowned upon by more serious gamers, and the term is derogatory.

Scrivener v 1.0 released (Mac)

Scrivener v 1.0 released (Mac):

Corkboard.jpg

Mac only: Previously-mentioned Scrivener word processor for the Mac has been released, and it has the Hipster PDA inventor Merlin Mann raving, especially about the (of course!) index card view:

Scrivener makes the anarchic approach to writing a little less chaotic by letting you create any number of ‘index cards’ which contain a title and a short synopsis of what that index card is meant to contain. These cards live on a ‘cork board’ and each can be moved around, nested, put into folders, and so on, very much like real index cards, but with a big bonus.

In addition to the title and synopsis, each card is associated with a given section of the actual draft you’re building. This section could be anything from a blank page to a single sentence to a few paragraphs to an entire chapter — whatever works for you. There’s no scarcity to the number of cards you use, so go nuts.

That index cards/corkboard screenshot does look scrumptious. Scrivener 1.0 is $35 with a free 30-day full demo available to download.

Mini-comic of Cory’s Printcrime

Mini-comic of Cory’s Printcrime:

Cory Doctorow:

I’ve just uploaded a DIY mini-comic of my story ‘Printcrime,’ which appears in my new short story collection, Overclocked. The mini was designed and illustrated by the talented illustrator Martin Cendreda, a former South Park animator whose new works include Dang! from Top Shelf Comix — a bitter and fantastic comic. The mini is published by Secret Headquarters, the best comic shop in LA.

To assemble the mini, download and print the PDF, then follow the directions included to fold it into a no-staple origami 8-page mini-comic — it’s all under a Creative Commons Noncommercial Sharealike license — share it, tweak it, remix it, just don’t sell it.

doomsday clock redesign:

doomsdayclock.jpg
the Doomsday Clock, the graphic symbol of the world’s proximity to nuclear annihilation, has been (minimally?) redesigned. the clock is the emblem of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the advocacy group formed in 1945 by scientists from the Manhattan Project. the redesign coincides with the group’s decision to move the clock forward from 7 to 5 minutes before midnight, or metaphorical doomsday.

Disgraced Pastor Ted Haggard: Evangelicals Have “The Best Sex Life”…:

“Much has been made of America’s so-called religious divide, but few of the discussions and debates resemble Alexandra Pelosi’s new film, ‘Friends of God.’

The HBO documentary shows the Rev. Ted Haggard, the former president of the National Association of Evangelicals, talking frankly about how evangelical Christians have sex more than any other religious group.

A NES Gets Crammed Into a NES Controller:

nescontrollermod.jpgAn enterprising young modder has managed to cram an entire NES into a classic NES controller. Yes, now you can simply plug a controller directly into your TV without having to worry about a system in between.

It’s not exactly your childhood’s NES. The controller is pre-loaded with 70 games, and you can pop a cartridge onto the back if the one you want isn’t included. Sure, it might be awkward playing with a cartridge hanging off your controller, but who the hell are you to complain?

Here’s how to server up your site for all the game systems, Harper writes -

‘The WordPress Ultimate Gamer’s Pack is an essential set of plugins that automatically renders an optimized version of your posts and pages when visitors come to your blog on a Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS-Lite, or Sony PSP. Each device is automatically detected, there is no configuration needed. The theme used by each plugin optimizes your blogs layout and fonts for each device. For example, the Wii Edition plugin uses the ‘Wii’ font at sizes that provide for easy reading on TV screens.’ [via] Thansk Brian! - Link.

Clooney and SciFi making “Diamond Age” miniseries

Filed under: tv — mist. @ 2:31 am

Clooney and SciFi making “Diamond Age” miniseries:

Cory Doctorow:
Neal Stephenson’s Hugo-award winning masterpiece The Diamond Age is being made into a SciFi Channel miniseries. The Diamond Age tells the story of a group of neo-Victorians who’ve embraced strait-laced ethics and craftsmanship as a response to the infinite possibilities of nanotechnology. It features a stupendously imaginative interactive storybook, moments of convulsive hilarity, and a lovely explanation of Turing-complete computing. It’s my second-favorite Stephenson novel (after Cryptonomicon), so don’t screw it up, SciFi!

SCI FI Channel unveiled a new slate of programs in development, which includes shows from executive producers George Clooney, Darren Star and Mark Burnett. SCI FI made the announcement Jan. 12 at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

Diamond Age, based on Neal Stephenson’s best-selling novel The Diamond Age: Or a Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer, is a six-hour miniseries from Clooney and fellow executive producer Grant Heslov of Smokehouse Productions.
