AlphaCool LCD Tattle Tales on Your PC:

Alphacool%20LCD.jpg Like the annoying little sibling we once were (sorry, sis) the Alphacool LCD squeals on its bigger sibling (in this case your PC) telling you everything it’s doing. The Alphacool hooks up via USB and displays CPU load, system temperature, memory use, or anything else you want it to. You can even have it display your incoming e-mail or RSS feeds while you use your main LCD to watch a flick or play games. The Alphacool only has a 240 x 128 resolution and the display is in lovely blue-screen-of-death blue, but we still think it’s a cool feature to have if you have the $240 bucks to splurge on it.

Scroll through Firefox tabs:

firefox%20tabs.jpg

Here’s a nice Firefox gem: if you’ve opened a lot of tabs (so many that the scrolling arrow appears on the right), put your mouse on the row of tabs and try to scroll with the mousewheel: you’ll see the tabs move from left to right, making it very easy to find the one you need.

A gem, indeed! Thanks, Andreas.

Nuclear Strike = Dead, No Cellphone Replacement

Filed under: BOOM! — mist. @ 1:30 am

Nuclear Strike = Dead, No Cellphone Replacement:

nuclearattack.jpgOur even more jaded friends at the Consumerist received an interesting tip regarding big cellphone insurance provider Asurion’s exclusion of coverage. This is direct from the policy:

L. Any Loss or damage caused by or through or in consequence, directly or indirectly, of Nuclear Hazard, meaning any weapon employing atomic fission or fusion; or nuclear reaction or radiation or radioactive contamination from any other cause; but we will pay for direct physical Loss caused by resulting fire, if the fire would be covered under this Certificate.

Great. So while my ghost is growing a third eye, it will need to write the insurance company arguing that my phone was burned in a fire after the nuclear explosion hit.

Anti-Daylight Savings drive-in ad from the 50s

Anti-Daylight Savings drive-in ad from the 50s:

Cory Doctorow:

Mike sez, ‘We are off Daylight Savings Time again as of 2 this morning. Check out this drive-in intermission film from the 1950s. At exactly 2 minutes into the clip is an exhortation to stay off DST. Staying on ‘natural’ time was portrayed as almost a patriotic and religious duty, but the real reason was undoubtedly that it cut into the drive-ins’ business.’

It is indeed DST day today — turn back your clocks, change the batteries in your smoke alarms, and don’t crash your car from circadian disorientation.

Weekend Project: Become a zombie:

zombie.png

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned zombie costume to scare the bejeebers out of trick or treaters, and wikiHow’s got a great (and pretty extensive) tutorial on exactly what constitutes a kickass zombie ensemble. One note:

Learn to do the dance from ‘Thriller.’ This is especially fun in a group. There are a few simple moves that are universally recognizable, and the dance helps separate ‘people having a fun time being zombies’ from ‘people being weird being zombies.’

This is JUST the excuse I’ve been waiting for to pop out my old Michael Jackson records. For even more zombie goodness, check out how to make your zombie costume….it’s all about the braaiiinnnss, baby.

Firefly Fans Fight Back Against Universal

Firefly Fans Fight Back Against Universal:

“Gossi writes ‘What happens when a film studio and a fanbase get into bed? Fans of Joss Whedon’s Firefly, and the movie by Universal Studios — Serenity — are not amused. After being encouraged to viral market Serenity, the studio has started legal action against fans (demanding $9000 in retroactive licensing fees in one case and demanding fan promotion stop), and going after Cafepress. The fans response? Retroactively invoice Universal for their services.’

What happens after you’re tossed out of the airlock?

Filed under: Interesting — mist. @ 12:49 pm

What happens after you’re tossed out of the airlock?:

“Lost in space… forever? What happens after you’re tossed out of the airlock?

OK, we’ve all seen it countless times in science fiction films and TV shows. The captain gets wise to the bad guy and tosses him into the cold, vast vacuum of space to die. Or the hero is given a burial-at-space and her flag-draped casket is released out of the space ship. Or President Roslyn learns that you’re a frakking Cylon and tosses you out of the airlock. ;-)

Here’s my question: after the bad guy dies, what happens to his body and space suit? It’s in a vacuum, so there are no forces to cause it to deteriorate, correct? Does it float until it loses its momentum, so it just sits in space forever? Provided it doesn’t get snatched by the gravity of a large or moving mass, it’ll just be there forever, right?”

What do you get for the Mac portable user who has everything? Why, a sticker from Jobby Roger of course. This $4 sticker (that includes shipping in the US, International orders cost $5) instantly transforms any MacBook, iBook, MacBook Pro, or PowerBook into a laptop that Blackbeard would be glad to use.

Each additional sticker costs $2, and if you want 10 or more a deal can be made. Yar.

These stickers make a great accompaniment to the English to Pirate translator widget.
